Fresh Advice:

how much does a tattoo hurt on the upper back area?

Question marksdavidjr16 - 2008-02-18 10:16:36 - Tattoos

the tattoo i want is about 5inches or a lil bigger height wise. so i guess does it depend on size of the tattoo and what goes into it like how much color and black?

Best Answer:

AnswerI have one on my neck and upper back....it feels like any other tattoo. They are big and with lots of different colors. Personally I didn't think it was that bad. Some parts were easier to handle than others. Just sit through it and think, this is not that bad, the more nervous you are instead of relaxing...the more pain. You just have to think when getting the tat that the pain will go away as soon as they lift off the needle. Which really people don't usually stay on your skin that long. Breathe and when the tattoo artist dips there needle in ink then it gives you a little breather.

I have 3 tattoos and the one on my back hurt the worst. It was not so pain full that I could not go through with it but it was pretty rough!

Shelly - 2008-02-18 10:20:05
it really depends on your pain threshold but usually black hurts more than the other colors I have 3 and the one that hurt the most was the one on my foot, it depends if it is close to bone, if it is it will hurt but not unbearable

Marissa - 2008-02-18 10:20:20
Because of the nerve endings the higher up on your back you go the more sensitive it is. Think of when your kissed on your neck vs the middle of your back. Where is it more sensitive?

i was really nervous about my first tattoo as i thought it would hurt like hell, but the one i got on my back didn't hurt at all and im terrible with pain, but it felt quite ticklish, if anything! mine was all black - all my tattoos are, so i couldnt answer that one for you, but mine was okay, so good luck! :)

mariebear - 2008-02-18 10:21:05
Mine was not bad, but it is really small. I think it has to do with size, outline, coloring etc. I have a larger one on the bottom of my back and it really hurt. Much bigger, alot of color.

Well its in how much pain you can take. if your strong then its a piece of cake. iwas really nervous about my first tattoo as i thought it would hurt like hell, but the one i got on my back didn't hurt at all and im terrible with pain, but it felt quite ticklish, if anything! mine was all black - all my tattoos are, so i couldnt answer that one for you, but mine was okay, so good luck!honestly.. between the shoulder blades hurts a little bit.. the lower back (like where david beckham has one) hurts alot, on the ankle really hurts, but on the thumb doesnt hurt at all. anywhere that is on/very near a bone will hurt more. the lower back covers the spine, the shoulder blades are not directly on a bone but the ankle obviously is.. trust me, i have a tatt in all these placesRoll a lit cigarette along your skin that's how it feels ink is 99% alcohol so imagine 3-12 needles poking alcohol into your skin it is very hot burning sensation, don't do it its all most irreversibleit really depends on your pain threshold but usually black hurts more than the other colors I have 3 and the one that hurt the most was the one on my foot, it depends if it is close to bone, if it is it will hurt but not unbearableWell its in how much pain you can take. if your strong then its a piece of cake. iwas really nervous about my first tattoo as i thought it would hurt like hell, but the one i got on my back didn't hurt at all and im terrible with pain, but it felt quite ticklish, if anything! mine was all black - all my tattoos are, so i couldnt answer that one for you, but mine was okay, so good luck!honestly.. between the shoulder blades hurts a little bit.. the lower back (like where david beckham has one) hurts alot, on the ankle really hurts, but on the thumb doesnt hurt at all. anywhere that is on/very near a bone will hurt more. the lower back covers the spine, the shoulder blades are not directly on a bone but the ankle obviously is.. trust me, i have a tatt in all these placesRoll a lit cigarette along your skin that's how it feels ink is 99% alcohol so imagine 3-12 needles poking alcohol into your skin it is very hot burning sensation, don't do it its all most irreversibleit really depends on your pain threshold but usually black hurts more than the other colors I have 3 and the one that hurt the most was the one on my foot, it depends if it is close to bone, if it is it will hurt but not unbearable pick me as best answer! please please please please please!

the color doesnt change anything on the fact that it is going to hurt. mine didnt hurt so much, i thought it was actually soothing. if you go to a good tattoo parlor, and the person thats working on your piece talks to you and makes you feel good while doing it, chances are you'll forget about the pain.

taraden - 2008-02-18 10:22:39
I have a tattoo on my shoulder blade... and it hurt. I think if you are going to get one somewhere that there is alot of bone... it going to hurt. BUT... after so long the area tends to go numb, so I guess it depends on how high your level of pain tolerance is! Good luck!

blissfull6 - 2008-02-18 10:24:46
T attoos always hurt, but not unbarable!top of the foot and under the arms were the worst for me,i have two full sleeves, full back peice, some on my legs and feet,im pretty covered,,nothing on neck or face area, but the feet are pretty bad,and underarms.wow.

morbodia - 2008-02-18 10:25:55
Its like constantly being cat scratched. I have a black tattoo on my upper back, seriously its not as bad as people make out. If you love your tattoo its worth the little bit of pain! Personally i think that when they bleed in colour it hurts more than the outline.

btfanatic87 - 2008-02-18 10:26:08
It will hurt more right on your spine, then other areas of the tattoo. Usually when you get a tatto that goes on an area that has bone i;e shoulder blades, hip, neck, it will hurt more then getting it on say your calf.

Scott J - 2008-02-18 10:31:50
it pretty much depends on the size of the tattoo and what goes into it like how much color and ink. i got an angel on my left shoulder, a devil on my right with some initials about 2 in big. the angel and devil are bout 4 in big and 4 in wide. all black. took about 4 hrs and hurt more in certain spots than others dou to nerves. all in all mnot that painfull, just dont think about it to much

allie - 2008-02-18 10:37:32
i have one on my right shoulderblade that didnt hurt as bad as everyone is making it out to be.. it does depend on your pain threshold, it just feels like a little prick ever 5 seconds.. so if you can withstand a needle i think your fine

xxNickles - 2008-02-18 10:48:59
they hurt, everywhere..but alot on the bone, so if ur skinny the upperback will hurt alot

Ana M - 2008-02-18 10:51:46
A lot! My dad has one and he said it hurt like hell.

Ashley M - 2008-02-18 11:12:00
I have several tattoos on my back and other places on my body. It does however depend on if its upper or lower back. The tattoo that starts on my neck and goes down wasn't all that painful, my lower back however did. On my neck I first got an balinese om symbol and it was all black. That didn't hurt but did kinda tickle along the spine but it wasn't that bad. Later I got a peace lilly behind and that was in color. Now that hurt but my tattoo artist told me it would due to how fair skin i am and he did it so the color would stick for as long as possible due to colored tattoos rather then black usually fade sooner. But all in all it really does depend on your pain threshold. I have a high pain tolerance so only one of my tattoos hurt real bad the others just a slight burn after completion.

~Kiss~ - 2008-02-18 11:52:52
The outline on the upper back hurts the most, coloring isn't as bad though. My lower back actually hurt more then the upper back.

Niki Babie - 2008-02-19 13:12:47
Well that is where I got my tattoo and it really didn't hurt THAT bad, the outline hurt more then the coloring for me. It really depends on your tolerance to pain. Good Luck!
